Gallery Da Vinci is pleased to present The Dream in the Garden, a solo exhibition of photographs by Liang Jianwen, on view August 24 through August 31, 2026, with a closing reception on August 29.
An artist and educator, Liang approaches photography as a way of constructing dreamlike worlds through the language of portraiture. His images move through femininity, beauty, and cultural memory, where contemporary women become vessels for emotion, imagination, and symbolism. Fans, opera costumes, painterly tonalities, and other borrowed elements dissolve the boundary between the real and the imagined, producing scenes that feel at once familiar and otherworldly.
The exhibition unfolds as a journey into a dream. Instead of presenting Eastern aesthetics as a cultural identity, Liang treats it as an evolving sensory landscape shaped by memory, imagination, and perception. His approach is deliberate, atmospheric, and attentive to what emerges in the space between staging and feeling. The resulting body of work carries the quality of a dream held briefly in view, and of what continues after the looking ends.

Liang Jianwen is a contemporary visual artist working primarily in photography, whose practice reimagines traditional Chinese aesthetics through contemporary portraiture. Originally a school teacher, he began photographing unexpectedly while documenting students' lives on campus, an act of observation that gradually became a lifelong exploration of the portrait. Over the years he has developed a visual language that joins technical precision to the philosophical concerns of Chinese aesthetics such as emptiness, balance, atmosphere, and the relationship between humanity and nature.
Liang draws tea culture, Qiang embroidery, lion dance, paper-cutting, ceramics, and ink-inspired composition into contemporary photographic narratives, offering Chinese culture as a living visual language that continues to evolve across cultures. His work has earned Gold Medals from organizations including APAS, APU, and GPU, and has been shown in international photography salons and exhibitions. Beyond the recognition, his practice uses photography as a bridge between tradition and modernity, East and West, in images that carry both visual beauty and cultural memory.
